Hirosaki Apples

"My Favorite thing to do, is to go where I have never been"- Diane Arbus

Apple picking in Hirosaki Ringo Park.

This weekend I went apple picking with a group of foreigners ( from outside of Japan), my neighbor Emma organized a little outing. Aomori Prefecture is widely known for the variety of apples they grow. When I first arrived I remember seeing all the beautiful orchards and immediately recognizing that they were apple trees. The trees were much shorter I though, and after asking I found out people intentionally grow them short (in Y shapes) so that people don't have to use ladders when picking the fruit! Typically older folks are out in the orchards picking the fruits. Another observation I have made is that the apples are breed differently here. When you cut an apple they don't turn ugly brown! I leave apples in my fridge, already cut for later and they were still as crispy and white on the inside as when I freshly cut them (cut and left for daysss)...weird right? At least the apples I  have eaten in the states always turn brown a little after cutting them.

Anyhow, the apple park in Hirosaki was so much fun! We happened to unknowingly go on a festival day so they had all kinds of fun stuff to see and enjoy! and of course apple flavored everything! Here are some pictures of my Sunday Fun Day.

So crispy and juicy! this is the Hirosaki Fuji.

Put on a sun hat and coat and pose!

Giant fresh apple pie! (they are cutting it up into squares)

Need I explain? Apple flavored delicious creamy ice cream!!!

Baking their bread on a stick! (of course apple flavored dough)

Views of Mount Iwaki from the Apple Park.

¡Ya llegué!

This is where I am staying, Karana Residence. I finally made it to Bali, Indonesia ! Goodness. So many emociones. I left Oregon on Tuesday... and arrived today Thursday at 2:40pm Bali time. Woah. My first flight from Portland was to Canada ( 1.5 hour flight), then Canada to Singapore (13 hour flight), then Singapore to Manila (3.5 hours ) and finally Manila to Bali ( 3 hours) + about 9 hours at airport transfers... phew!!!  As soon as I arrived at the Bali airport I took out some rupiahs from the ATM and headed out to find a taxi. My "taxi" ended up being some random guy who wasn't a taxi and got lost trying to find Karana... sigh. Wasted 1 whole hour, I mapped it out beforehand and  it was supposed to be a 6 minute drive from airport (eye roll) The roads in Bali are like a labyrinth and everyone is on scooters. Once I got settled I threw my stuff in my room and headed to the beach.  I got to see the sunset and after all those flights and lost ...

Corazón contento en Bali

" Pictures are a one way ticket to a memory..." - unknown Well I haven't blogged in some days now ( I don't plan on blogging every single day... some of you asked ) A lot has happened and my heart has been racing with excitement every single day. I am In love with the Islands of Indonesia, and I hope that you all can experience it some day. It's true that pictures are worth a thousand words, so here are some pictures and small captions. It's Tuesday on my side of the world, and my week in Indonesia is almost over. Every single time I go to a beach and go horseback riding I ask if I can take the horses into the water, thus far different state and country rules of places I have been to don't allow it. In the Gilli Islands horseback riding in the ocean is possible. I have  always wanted to ride in the ocean! My horse was swimming, I was swimming and the wind that hit my face whispered words of freedom. Goal number #35 - check!  ...

MAMTA Internship

Today was my first day with the MAMTA Health Institute for mother and child! So for those of you who may not know MAMTA is a non-profit, NGO that aims to "empower the undeserved and marginalized individuals and community through gender sensitive participatory processes for achieving optimal and sustainable health and development" (mission statement). The staff at MAMTA is amazing, and I am so excited to further work with them, my task now is to determine exactly where I want to do my projects/research. I am currently debating between Maternal Health and Reproductive Health in adolescents ( sexual activity in India sometimes starts at the age of 10!!! and a huge percentage of 14 year olds are sexually active/pregnant or married). I also met a wonderful young Punjabi girl who will be a part of the MAMTA internship as well, she is very beautiful and attends Delhi University. She took me to an Indian restaurant where I tried my first dish!!! (and I forgot what it was called... ...
